Growing & Sowing Tips

📅 SowingStart seedlings indoors in spring (February-March) or late summer (July-August); transplant out 4-6 weeks later.
🌱 Depth0.5-1 cm (in a seed tray)
📏 Spacing45-60 cm
🌞 SunFull sun / Partial shade
💧 WateringRegular; water before the surface dries but don't waterlog
🧺 HarvestOnce the head firms up (usually 80-120 days), harvest when it feels firm when pressed on top
🪴 SoilFertile, slightly chalky, well-draining neutral soil; pH 6.5-7.5 is ideal. This neutral-to-alkaline preference is the main reason for incompatibility when interplanted with acid-loving nightshades like tomato/pepper/eggplant.
⭐ DifficultyModerate
🗓️ SeasonSpring

📅 Calendar is for the Northern Hemisphere; in the Southern Hemisphere shift sowing times by ~6 months.

💡 Key tip: Avoid planting the cabbage family (brassicas) repeatedly in the same place; rotate for at least 3-4 years to prevent clubroot disease. Also avoid clustering cabbages side by side with other brassicas (broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts); they share the same pests (cabbageworm, aphid, flea beetle) and nutrients.
🤝 Companion logic: Sage, rosemary, thyme and oregano deter the cabbage moth and cabbageworms with their strong scents; mint keeps the cabbage moth away; dill and chamomile draw beneficial bees and predatory insects; the onion family (id 59, 61) masks the cabbage's scent and suppresses moths, loopers and aphids (since both are heavy feeders, enrich the soil with fertiliser).
