💡 Key tip: Don't use fresh manure or coarse compost; the roots will fork. Loosen the soil to a depth of 30 cm before sowing and pick out the stones. Carrot seeds germinate slowly and unevenly (2-3 weeks); keep the soil moist until they emerge, and sow radish alongside both to provide a marker plant and to prevent surface crusting.
🤝 Companion logic: Onion, leek and garlic (id 55, 59, 61) drive off the carrot rust fly with their sulphurous scent. Rosemary masks the carrot's smell with its strong scent and confuses the fly; sage is considered a friend by most sources, though some note root/scent competition, so cautious companionship is advised. Radish germinates fast and loosens the soil, acting as a marker plant for slow carrots. Bean/pea (id 16, 3) fix nitrogen. Don't sow dill right next to carrots: bolting/mature dill in particular stunts carrot growth, attracts the same carrot fly, and cross-pollinates to spoil seed quality (young dill can be beneficial if you harvest it before it flowers or leave at least 30 cm between them).
