Growing & Sowing Tips

📅 SowingSow in early spring or in late summer to early autumn; sow in succession for fresh leaves.
🌱 Depth0.5-1 cm
📏 Spacing15 cm (between plants, after thinning); rows 30 cm apart. Scatter the seed thinly and cover it with ~0.5-1 cm, then thin the seedlings to 15 cm.
🌞 SunPartial shade
💧 WateringModerate watering; keep the soil lightly moist, it's sensitive to drought
🧺 HarvestRegularly pick the outer leaves before flowering; use fresh, drying greatly reduces its aroma
🪴 SoilLight, humus-rich, well-draining, moist soil; grows poorly in heavy clay
⭐ DifficultyModerate
🗓️ SeasonSpring

📅 Calendar is for the Northern Hemisphere; in the Southern Hemisphere shift sowing times by ~6 months.

💡 Key tip: Chervil can't take strong sun; in summer it grows well under taller, shade-giving plants or beside leafy greens. Transplanting is risky because the taproot dislikes disturbance, so preferably sow it directly in place. If you must, gently move only very young seedlings with a modular tray before the taproot develops.
🤝 Companion logic: It is lettuce's most valuable friend: it protects lettuce from slugs (trap/repellent) and, by drawing beneficial insects, from aphids/ants; their shade and moisture needs overlap. It improves the flavour and growth of radish; it is also compatible with broccoli/brassicas (Brassica) and pansies. Keep it away from allelopathic fennel. If you plan to save seed in the same bed with other apiaceae (dill, cilantro), watch out for cross-pollination.
