💡 Key tip: Dill bolts to flower quickly; make successive sowings to extend the fresh-leaf season. Since it is in the same parsley family (Apiaceae) as fennel, carrot and caraway, it can cross-pollinate; keep it away from these to protect seed/flavour quality. If you let it flower, it attracts beneficial insects such as ladybirds, hoverflies and parasitoid wasps; for this reason letting some dill flower at the edge of brassica and tomato beds provides natural pest control.
🤝 Companion logic: It pairs well with brassicas (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, kohlrabi), cucumber, corn, lettuce, onion and asparagus; it repels the cabbageworm/moth and draws the parasitoid wasps (Cotesia) that prey on them. Because it is in the same parsley family (Apiaceae) as fennel, carrot and caraway, it carries a risk of cross-pollination and bitter hybrid/off-flavour; keep it away from pepper, eggplant and potato too. Its relationship with tomato is conditional: young/immature dill repels the hornworm and benefits tomatoes, but once it bolts and matures it suppresses tomato growth through nutrient competition and shading; prune or move it before it flowers. (Note: dill is not a legume and does not fix nitrogen.)
