Growing & Sowing Tips

📅 SowingSow in spring once the soil is workable, or (best) in midsummer for an autumn harvest; quality improves in cool weather, while in heat it turns bitter and may bolt
🌱 Depth0.5-1 cm
📏 Spacing25-30 cm
🌞 SunFull sun; in hot regions or summer, prefer partial shade against the midday sun (the shade of a taller neighbour reduces bolting and bitterness)
💧 WateringModerate watering; regular watering reduces bitterness
🧺 HarvestCut once a mature head forms; a head touched by light frost is less bitter
🪴 SoilModerately rich, well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil; also grows in heavy soil
⭐ DifficultyEasy
🗓️ SeasonAutumn

📅 Calendar is for the Northern Hemisphere; in the Southern Hemisphere shift sowing times by ~6 months.

💡 Key tip: 2-3 weeks before harvest, once the outer leaves are 10-12 cm, tie the outer leaves together with string/a rubber band, or cover the top with a pot/board to blanch the heart. The plant must be DRY, otherwise it rots. This process reduces bitterness.
🤝 Companion logic: It works well with carrot, radish, onion, lettuce and beetroot; tall companions (pole bean/tomato) provide shade in the summer heat. Marigold and yarrow draw beneficial insects. IMPORTANT: don't plant it near fennel (allelopathic, suppresses growth)
