💡 Key tip: French beans fix atmospheric nitrogen into the soil with the rhizobia bacteria in their roots; so don't give too much nitrogen fertiliser, and leave the roots in the soil after harvest to give the next crop nitrogen. With successive sowings you can harvest fresh produce over a long season.
🤝 Companion logic: It grows well with tomato, strawberry, brassicas, potato, cucumber and carrot; it fixes nitrogen in the soil. Marigold, nasturtium and summer savory (Satureja) repel the bean beetle. Keep it away from onion, garlic, chives, leek and fennel (alliums hinder nitrogen fixation).
