💡 Key tip: The alpha-terthienyl/thiophene compounds secreted from the roots suppress root-knot and root-lesion nematodes; HOWEVER this effect only works when marigold is used as a cover crop/rotation: it must be densely sown over the WHOLE area to be protected, at least 2 months before the target crop, then worked into the soil. Scattering a few among vegetables (intercrop) is ineffective for nematode control; what's more, marigold can increase some nematode species (stubby-root, spiral, sting, awl). Regular deadheading prolongs flowering. Also note: marigold can attract spider mites and slugs/snails; beside crops suffering from these pests it can work as a trap plant, but it may also pose a risk to sensitive neighbours.
🤝 Companion logic: A broad-spectrum protector and pollinator attractor compatible with most vegetables and fruit; it is especially effective at repelling whitefly next to tomato (the limonene released by French marigold was confirmed by Newcastle University research in 2019). Important nuance: the evidence for beans and legumes is mixed — some sources recommend planting it alongside to repel a pest (the Mexican bean beetle), while West Coast Seeds and other sources note that its allelopathic root secretions may lower bean growth/yield; so use it cautiously near beans.
