Growing & Sowing Tips

📅 SowingA cool-season plant; sown in early spring and late summer/autumn. As a green manure/biofumigant it is sown and worked into the soil before flowering.
🌱 Depth0.5-1 cm
📏 Spacing10-15 cm for greens; dense broadcast sowing as cover/green manure
🌞 SunFull sun
💧 WateringModerate; regular moisture (it bolts early in drought)
🧺 HarvestGreens in 30-60 days; as a cover crop, cut in 6-10 weeks
🪴 SoilWell-draining, fertile, near-neutral soil (pH ~6.5-7.0)
⭐ DifficultyEasy
🗓️ SeasonSpring/Autumn

📅 Calendar is for the Northern Hemisphere; in the Southern Hemisphere shift sowing times by ~6 months.

💡 Key tip: Cut it before flowering: the biofumigant effect is highest then, and you prevent it from scattering seed and coming up as a wild volunteer the following year. After working the cut fresh mustard into the soil, wait 2-3 weeks before sowing small-seeded vegetables (the allelopathic effect suppresses germination).
🤝 Companion logic: Being a brassica, it is a strong trap plant that protects brassicas by drawing the flea beetle and cabbage pests to itself; but since it shares the same pests and diseases (clubroot), don't sow it right beside/after brassicas. As a green manure before potatoes it suppresses soil diseases. Keep it away from nightshades and strawberries.
