Growing & Sowing Tips

📅 SowingStart as seedlings indoors between February and April; move outdoors after the last frost. For direct sowing, April-May.
🌱 Depth1-2 cm
📏 Spacing10-15 cm
🌞 SunFull sun
💧 WateringRegular watering; the soil shouldn't dry out but there should be no standing water
🧺 HarvestAbout 100-120 days after sowing; when roughly 50-80% of the leaves yellow and the neck softens and falls over, the onions are mature and ready to harvest (collect within 1-2 weeks after the neck softens). If an onion bolts early (sends up a flower stalk) it should be harvested at once, as those onions cannot be stored long.
🪴 SoilLight, well-draining, nutrient-rich soil; pH 6.0-7.0
⭐ DifficultyEasy
🗓️ SeasonSpring/Summer

📅 Calendar is for the Northern Hemisphere; in the Southern Hemisphere shift sowing times by ~6 months.

💡 Key tip: If an onion sends up a flower stalk (bolts), bulb growth stops and energy goes to seed; pinching off the flower/stalk won't reverse the bolting or grow the bulb. So harvest flowering onions promptly and use them fresh (bolted onions don't store well). Stop watering in the last 1-2 weeks before harvest; cure (rest) the lifted onions for 2-3 weeks in a dry, airy place.
🤝 Companion logic: Planted together with carrot, their pungent scents confuse and drive off each other's pests (the onion fly and the carrot fly). Onion also repels the pests of brassicas (cabbageworm, cabbage fly) and of lettuce/beet/strawberry (aphids); however, some sources note that the onion's volatile oils can negatively affect cabbage growth/flavour, so leave a gap from cabbage. Keep it away from pea, bean and other legumes (onion hinders the legumes' root bacteria and stops their growth); don't plant it next to other alliums like leek and garlic (shared pest/onion-fly risk).
