Growing & Sowing Tips

📅 SowingIn late March, plant seed tubers 10 cm deep with the sprouts facing up.
🌱 Depth10-15 cm
📏 Spacing30-35 cm (60-70 cm between rows)
🌞 SunFull sun
💧 WateringRegular watering once tuber formation begins; tubers may crack under water stress
🧺 HarvestHarvest once the leaves start to yellow; lift on a sunny day and let dry for a few hours
🪴 SoilLoose, deep, organically rich, well-draining soil; slightly acidic pH 5.0-6.5 (for scab problems, keeping the pH at ~5.2 and below, in the 4.8-5.5 range, suppresses the disease)
⭐ DifficultyEasy
🗓️ SeasonSpring/Summer

📅 Calendar is for the Northern Hemisphere; in the Southern Hemisphere shift sowing times by ~6 months.

💡 Key tip: When the shoots reach 15-20 cm, draw soil up around the base of the stems to hill them (hilling); this prevents the tubers from greening and increases yield. Rotation: return to the same plot only every 3 years; don't plant after nightshades like tomato/eggplant.
🤝 Companion logic: It is generally a good friend with bean, corn, marigold and horseradish; for same-family eggplant and tomato, as well as cucumber, squash and raspberry, most sources recommend keeping them apart (blight/shared pest risk). For onion and cauliflower, sources are contradictory (mixed).
