Growing & Sowing Tips

📅 SowingPlant as a dormant cane or root in late winter to early spring.
🌱 DepthRoots 5-8 cm deep; crown at soil level
📏 Spacing45-60 cm (1.5-2 m between rows)
🌞 SunFull sun
💧 WateringModerate; water regularly especially during fruit set, keep the root zone moist
🧺 HarvestHarvest when the fruit is fully colored and comes off easily (usually mid- to late summer)
🪴 SoilDeep, humus-rich, very well-draining, slightly acidic (pH 5.6-6.5). Poorly drained, wet soil increases the risk of root rot (Phytophthora) and Verticillium.
⭐ DifficultyModerate
🗓️ SeasonSpring

📅 Calendar is for the Northern Hemisphere; in the Southern Hemisphere shift sowing times by ~6 months.

💡 Key tip: On summer raspberries (floricane), cut the old fruited canes down to the base after harvest; new canes will fruit the following year. Don't plant where potatoes/tomatoes (or other nightshades) have grown in the last 4 years: the risk of Verticillium wilt is high.
🤝 Companion logic: Garlic, chives and yarrow make good neighbours; alliums (sulphur-rich) suppress fungal diseases, while yarrow/marigold repel pest insects. Nasturtium and radish act as trap plants, drawing aphids and beetles away. Keep it away from potatoes and other nightshades (tomato, pepper, eggplant) and from strawberries: these host Verticillium wilt, and the fungus persists in the soil for years. Plant fennel far away, as it is allelopathic.
