💡 Key tip: Runner beans climb high, making them ideal for vertical gardening; their red flowers draw bees and (in their native range) hummingbirds, thus also helping to pollinate nearby plants.
🤝 Companion logic: It gets along well with corn, squash, cucumber, radish and lettuce; summer savory (Satureja) boosts growth and flavour and deters the bean beetle. Note: in the classic Three Sisters the runner bean stays too vigorous and can smother the corn (the RHS recommends a climbing French bean instead). Keep it away from the onion-garlic family, fennel and beetroot; these stunt its growth.
