Growing & Sowing Tips

📅 SowingSow directly into the soil or into modules after the last frost; transplant when seedlings reach 10-15 cm.
🌱 Depth2-3 cm
📏 Spacing30-60 cm (depending on variety)
🌞 SunFull sun
💧 WateringModerate; keep the root zone slightly moist, avoid wetting the leaves
🧺 HarvestCut once the heads are fully open and the seeds have matured (usually 60-90 days)
🪴 SoilModerately fertile, well-draining; very rich soil increases stem length but reduces flowering
⭐ DifficultyEasy
🗓️ SeasonSpring / Summer

📅 Calendar is for the Northern Hemisphere; in the Southern Hemisphere shift sowing times by ~6 months.

💡 Key tip: Choose pollen-bearing varieties to best support a diversity of beneficial insects: pollen-free ornamental types may still draw bees with nectar but don't provide the protein/pollen source bees need. Regular deadheading only encourages reblooming in branching varieties; on single-stem types it has no effect. Leave the heads on if you want birds and seed.
🤝 Companion logic: Compatible with squash and corn (the 'fourth sister' of the Three Sisters); it draws pollinators and beneficial predatory insects, and gives cucumber and tomato a living stake and temporary shade. Keep it away from potatoes, pole/climbing beans and rhubarb: sunflower root secretions (allelopathy) hinder germination and growth, and for rhubarb it acts as an alternate host of a pest insect (rhubarb curculio). Leave 60-90 cm between it and sensitive plants.
