Growing & Sowing Tips

📅 SowingSow winter wheat in autumn and spring wheat in early spring; broadcast directly onto the soil and rake in.
🌱 Depth3-5 cm
📏 SpacingSow in bands; 15-20 cm between rows
🌞 SunFull sun
💧 WateringLow to moderate; critical during germination and heading, dry weather is good as it ripens
🧺 HarvestCut once the ears turn yellow and dry like straw (when moisture drops below 14%)
🪴 SoilDeep, moderately fertile, well-draining; grows poorly in heavy clay soil
⭐ DifficultyModerate
🗓️ SeasonSpring / Autumn / Winter

📅 Calendar is for the Northern Hemisphere; in the Southern Hemisphere shift sowing times by ~6 months.

💡 Key tip: In a small garden it is practical to use it as a cover crop / green manure; together with a legume (vetch, clover), winter wheat improves soil structure and nitrogen and suppresses weeds. If the sowing rate in kg/m² is not calculated correctly, yields drop.
🤝 Companion logic: Yarrow and marigold are beneficial: both attract the natural enemies (parasitoid wasps, ladybirds, hoverflies) of the grain aphid. Intercropping with garlic reduced the grain aphid (Sitobion avenae) and increased natural enemies and yield in peer-reviewed Chinese field trials. Keep it away from potatoes: the risk of shared wireworm is high. Note: marigold's (Tagetes) nematode suppression mainly works when it is grown as a cover/rotation crop in the PREVIOUS season; its effect is limited when intercropped at the same time.
